Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s contract saga has officially reached an end as the first baseman and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a monumental 14-year, $500-million deal early Monday morning.
Along with handing the 26-year-old the keys to the franchise, he was also handed the second-richest contract in baseball history.
In terms of present value, Guerrero now only trails Juan Soto’s record $756 million, 15-year deal with the New York Mets and jumps past Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers (which nets out closer to $460 million, depending on how deferrals get discounted). It’s also more than three times larger than the Blue Jays’ previous biggest agreement ever, George Springer’s $150 million over six years.
The four-time All-Star and once AL MVP runner-up holds a career .862 OPS with 160 home runs through 3,180 at-bats and a .288 batting average. Through 35 plate appearances in 2025, Guerrero has 10 hits and no home runs with a .286 average and .721 OPS.
After months of back-and-forth, the two sides finally found common ground. So much so that the Montreal-born Guerrero is now inked as a member of the Blue Jays for presumably the rest of his playing days.
Here’s a look at some of the top reactions to the historic deal from around the baseball world.
