Blue Jays aim to keep bats hot against Rockies in potential series sweep

There’s no place like home for the Toronto Blue Jays, but Coors Field may be a close second.

The Blue Jays look to sweep the Colorado Rockies in the final matchup of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.

Live coverage on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ begins at 3:10 p.m. ET / 12:10 p.m. PT.

Kevin Gausman (7-8, 3.99 ERA) will take the mound for the Blue Jays as he looks for his first win since July 21, which came against the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays have struggled to provide Gausman with run support in his last two starts, scoring one run in the right-hander’s last 12 innings.

That may change soon with the Blue Jays having scored 25 times in the series’ first two games, a dramatic turnaround after scoring 26 runs in six contests before the trip to Colorado.

The Rockies will start LHP Kyle Freeland (2-11, 5.26 ERA), who has given up six home runs in his last three outings. Freeland gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings of work during a 5-0 loss to Toronto on April 14. He may have his hands full again with the Blue Jays’ bats finally coming back to life.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finally took advantage of the Mile High City air in the Blue Jays’ 10-4 victory on Tuesday. After missing out on the barrage in the series opener, Guerrero hit a solo shot in the sixth inning. The blast set the stage for Addison Barger’s 17th homer of the season and Daulton Varsho going deep in the same inning. Varsho’s two-run homer was launched 467 feet into the upper deck in right field. The centre fielder has three home runs in four games since his return from a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined since May.

The Blue Jays (67-48) have won consecutive games for the first time since their win against the Detroit Tigers on July 26. Despite going 2-6 in their last eight games and losing their last two series against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, the Blue Jays continue to hold onto the top spot in the American League.

The Rockies have the worst record in the majors.

Toronto travel to Los Angeles to visit Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers on Friday for a three-game showdown between division leaders.
