The Toronto Blue Jays lost one of their key players at an inopportune time on Friday.
Catcher Alejandro Kirk exited with a thumb injury in the 10th inning when a tipped foul ball clipped his catching hand behind the plate in a game against the Chicago White Sox.
Manager John Schneider didn’t have a clear update after the game, just that he’s “hoping it’s not serious.”
Jeff Hoffman’s pitch appeared to hit Kirk outside the centre of his glove, and the Jays backstop immediately reacted as if something was wrong.
Things went from bad to worse when Tyler Heineman came in to replace Kirk and made a bad throw to first base, resulting in the tying run.
The White Sox then won the game 5-4 on a Tristan Peters single to right.
Kirk was selected for his second career All-Star Game last year.
