Blue Jays’ Guerrero Jr. has right knee inflammation, considered day to day

The Toronto Blue Jays say an MRI on all-star Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s right knee showed no structural damage. He is dealing with inflammation and is considered day to day.

Guerrero Jr. is not in the starting lineup for the second game in a row on Thursday against the New York Yankees.

However, he could be available off the bench, manager John Schneider said.

Guerrero Jr. was made a late scratch on Wednesday against the Yankees because of right knee discomfort.

Manager John Schneider told reporters that the team will know more about his condition after learning the results of an MRI that was scheduled to take place on Thursday.

“We got an MRI, it’s just right knee discomfort right now,” Schneider said after Wednesday’s win. “It was just the way he felt hitting, compared to yesterday, so obviously want to be careful with him.”

Guerrero, who was scheduled to be the designated hitter, ran gingerly to first base on an error in his final at-bat on Tuesday. Ernie Clement replaced Guerrero as a pinch-runner.

After Tuesday’s game, Schneider played down any concern about Guerrero.

“He’s a little banged up but he’s good,” Schneider said. “He’s feeling every game he’s been playing right now, but he’s good.”

Last week, Guerrero broke out of a power slump with home runs in three consecutive games.

While his numbers are down from previous years, Guerrero still leads the team with 24 home runs and 90 RBIs.
