Blue Jays’ Mark Shapiro addresses future with team: ‘I want to be here’

Of the many questions facing the Toronto Blue Jays this off-season, the status of president Mark Shapiro is among the biggest.

With his initial five-year contract with the club expiring at the end of this year, Shapiro told reporters on Wednesday that he wants to remain in Toronto — and that the desire has been reciprocated.

“I want to be here,” he said during a media availability on Wednesday. “I want to finish the job.”

Shapiro has been at the helm of the Blue Jays since 2015. The longtime MLB executive has seen the club through a full roster overhaul and rebuild, ushering in a new era this season with a surge of young, offensive-minded players that got its first taste of post-season baseball this fall.

“I love who I work with and appreciate who I work for,” Shapiro said.

Addressing the ongoing partnership between him and the organization, Shapiro said, “I’d expect that’s going to continue to happen.”
