The Toronto Blue Jays announced Tuesday that all-star shortstop Bo Bichette is considered day to day after an MRI revealed no significant structural damage to his right knee after he was hurt Monday.
Manager John Schneider said there is some inflammation. It is possible Bichette will need to go on the IL, but the Blue Jays aren’t ready to do that just yet.
Bichette sustained the injury during a 4-2 loss at home against the Baltimore Orioles.
The injury occurred in the bottom of the third inning after Bichette hit the ball into right field but pulled up while rounding first base and appeared to be in pain. Bichette, who was tagged out between first and second, was assisted by team staff as he limped off the field.
The Blue Jays said after the game that Bichette was experiencing “right knee discomfort.”
“He said on the field coming off that he kind of jammed it a little bit,” manager John Schneider explained. “A guy like him you want to be extremely proactive, obviously.”
Santiago Espinal took Bichette’s place at shortstop to start the fourth inning.
On Tuesday, the Blue Jays acquired shortstop Paul DeJong in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, increasing their depth at the position.
Espinal will start at shortstop on Tuesday, while struggling outfielder George Springer will return to the starting lineup after getting Monday off.
The 25-year-old Bichette, who made his second All-Star Game appearance this season, is fourth in the majors with a .321 batting average and second with 144 hits. He is also tied with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a team-leading 17 home runs.
The Blue Jays face the Orioles in the second game of their series Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and SN NOW.
