The Toronto Blue Jays are placing star shortstop Bo Bichette on the 10-day injured list with right patellar tendonitis after he left Monday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced Wednesday.
Bichette jammed his knee while running the bases in Toronto’s 4-2 loss. An MRI revealed that there was no structural damage, just inflammation of the knee.
The 25-year-old will remain with the team so they can monitor his progress daily.
A two-time All-Star, Bichette leads the American League with 144 hits and a .321 average, and has hit 17 home runs.
Ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, the Blue Jays acquired Paul DeJong from the St. Louis Cardinals. DeJong will handle the shortstop duties while Bichette is out.
Toronto also optioned reliever Nate Pearson to triple-A Buffalo and recalled Thomas Hatch before Wednesday’s game against Baltimore.
