Blue Jays place Romano on 15-day IL, call up Pearson from Buffalo

The Toronto Blue Jays placed relief pitcher Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list on Saturday, calling up Nate Pearson from Buffalo.

Romano is listed as having “lower-back inflammation.”

Romano looked uncomfortable as he took the mound during Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels for the save and was replaced by Yimi Garcia with one out remaining and the bases loaded.

“It’s low-back discomfort, kind of locked up on him a little bit,” Schneider said Saturday. “Wanted to play it a little bit safe there.”

Romano suffered a lower-back injury two weeks ago at the All-Star Game, which sidelined him for a week. MRI results at the time came back negative.

The 30-year-old from Markham, Ont., leads the American League with 28 saves and holds a 2.79 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 42.0 innings pitched this season.

Watch Game 2 of the series between the Angels and Blue Jays on Saturday, with coverage starting at 2:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. PT on Sportsnet and SN NOW.
