Blue Jays push back starters a day, TBD vs. Angels on Thursday

Could a surprise spot starter be in the works for the Blue Jays on Thursday?

The Toronto Blue Jays elected to push their rotation back a day, opening up the starting spot in Thursday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels, manager John Schneider announced on Wednesday.

Chris Bassitt was originally slated to open up the series but is now set to take the mound on Friday, with Bowden Francis and Kevin Gausman lined up to play Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The move lines up Jose Berrios and a 27th man to be available for Monday’s doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox.

The team has yet to announce who will start on Thursday, but trade deadline acquisition Ryan Yarbrough could be an option, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.

It’s also possible the team will call up rookie RHP Jake Bloss to make his Blue Jays debut after he was acquired in the trade with the Houston Astros for Yusei Kikuchi.
