Toronto Blue Jays star outfielder George Springer ramped up activity Friday participating in outfield drills and batting practice as he continues to recover from a knee sprain.
Springer, who ran the bases without issue Thursday, is still day-to-day, but will be reassessed Saturday.
“He looked good, he ran the bases well, and he felt good,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said Thursday. “At the end of the day, it’s going to be up to him (when he returns) — he’s the one who knows his body. But from what I saw, and what people saw, he looked good.”
Springer was placed on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 knee sprain after he collided with an outfield wall in Seattle on Aug. 14.
The 31-year-old has 16 home runs and 35 RBI in 49 games this season with a slash line of .269/.362/.610.
Springer, who signed a six-year, $150-million contract in the off-season, had been on a roll prior to the injury and was named the American League’s player of the week on consecutive occasions on Aug. 2 and Aug. 9.
Toronto begins a three-game series against the Tigers in Detroit on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. ET / 4:10 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and SN Now.
