Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer ran sprint drills in Buffalo on Saturday and is getting closer to a potential rehab stint with triple-A Buffalo.
“It’s the best day he’s had. He did everything 100 per cent, and now it’s looking better to start his rehab games,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters of Springer’s workout. “Today was his best day yet.”
Springer, who is currently rehabbing from a quad injury, ran “hard” first-to-third drills and straight-line sprints in the outfield, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. He also did throwing drills and took batting practice.
Despite Springer’s progress, Montoyo said there’s currently no timeframe for when the star outfielder could begin a rehab stint. When Springer is ready to play games again, according to Montoyo, it will be in Trenton with the triple-A team.
Unlike when Springer was used as a designated hitter in his first return from the injured list in late April, Montoyo expects Springer to be able to “do everything normal” when he is back with the Blue Jays this time around.
“The way he looked today, whenever he comes back, he will play more in the outfield,” Montoyo said when asked how Springer will fit into the lineup upon his return. “We think that he’ll be ready to play everywhere – play in the outfield, DH – and do everything normal.”
The 29-year-old has played just four games for the Blue Jays in 2021, and none since May 2, after signing a six-year, $150-million contract with the club in the off-season. Springer has two home runs and three RBIs in 18 plate appearances for Toronto.
