There are a few things I know for sure about fashion and one is that Alexa Chung can always be relied upon to wear trends before everyone else does. Case in point: an outfit she wore to a Christmas party in Soho, London last night ticked off three major trends that have been bubbling up in 2023 and will continue to make waves in 2024.
This isn’t the first time over the past few months that she’s combined a pop of red, a lot of leather and some sparkly accessories into her looks, but it is the first occasion where we’ve seen all three headline trends come together into one impeccable ensemble.
Leather—both in outerwear and other categories—was prevalent on the spring/summer 2024 runways, despite the season in question. So investing in a leather trench, coat, jacket, trousers or skirt will prove to be a solid investment over the coming year (if not years, as this is a boomerang trend that comes back time and again). Dashes of primary, lipstick-like red have been taking over Instagram and TikTok feeds ever since the summer, with shoes and bags (like Alexa’s little Prada beauty here) proving to be an easy way to inject colour and newness into one’s wardrobe. And then sparkles—where would we be without those? Less of a festive indulgence and more of a year-round pleasure, crystal-dotted and diamanté-studded jewellery, shoes and more have become something of a neutral or mainstay in our wardrobes, being used whenever an outfit needs a little jzzuzzing up. They are still ever-present on the runways for next year, taking up a noticeable amount of space in Milan.
