Cale Makar absent from Canada practice with illness

Star Canadian defenceman Cale Makar didn’t practise on Friday.

Makar missed Canada’s skate with an illness as the team prepares for Saturday’s showdown with the USA in Montreal at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Given Makar’s absence, the NHL and NHLPA agreed Friday morning to allow Thomas Harley to join Canada’s workouts in Montreal in case Makar is not able to go Saturday.

The 26-year-old played a game-high 28:06 in Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime win over Sweden, checking in with an even plus/minus, recording two shots on goal and blocking three shots.

The 2021-22 Norris Trophy winner skated alongside his Colorado Avalanche defence partner Devon Toews in Canada’s win.

In 57 games with the Avalanche in the 2024-25 season, Makar has 22 goals, 63 points and a plus-18.

Elsewhere on Canada’s blue line, Travis Sanheim paired with Drew Doughty at practice as he prepares to replace the injured Shea Theodore.

Josh Morrissey and Colton Parayko remain as Canada’s third D pair.

Puck drops between the U.S. and Canada at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Saturday. Catch all the action on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
