Canada has advanced to the semifinals at the 2024 Copa America after defeating Venezuela in penalties on Friday night.
Canada opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a close-range tap-in from Jacob Shaffelburg. They led for a while, but Venezuela equalized in the 64th minute with a goal from Salomón Rondón.
With the score still tied 1-1 at the conclusion of regulation time, the match headed straight to penalties. Rodón, Tomás Rincón, and Jhonder Cádiz scored for Venezuela while Jonathan David, Moïse Bombito, Alphonso Davies and Ismaël Koné scored for Canada to earn the win.
