Canada is moving on to the Davis Cup Final for the second time in three years after defeating Italy 2-1 in the semifinal on Saturday in Malaga, Spain.
Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime teamed up with Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., to claim the deciding doubles match, after both teams split the singles contests. Auger-Aliassime and Pospisil defeated Italy’s Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli 7-6 (2), 7-5 to send the Italians packing.
Auger-Aliassime, the world No. 6, defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, the 23rd-ranked singles player in the world, 6-3, 6-4, in the second match of the day to knot the score at 1-1, after Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., fell 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-4 to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the early match.
Canada will now face Australia, who defeated Croatia in the other semifinal. The final is set for Sunday.
