The red and white had to battle to the end to claim the gold, winning in overtime after being locked in a 2-2 tie for much of the game, but ultimately rising above. The golden goal came off the stick of Captain Canada, Marie-Philip Poulin.
With the win in tow, Canada claimed its first gold at the women’s worlds in nearly a decade, their last coming in 2012, also via overtime.
The Americans had claimed five straight gold medals heading into the tournament, winning four of those against Canada and one — their most recent — against Finland when the Canadians fell short of the final in 2019.
Now, courtesy of Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime win, the streak has come to an end, and Canada is a champion once again.
More to come.
