Canada grouped with Australia for women’s basketball in Paris

Canada’s women are set to face off against World No. 3 Australia, host-nation France and Afro-Basket champion Nigeria in Group B as the groups for the 2024 Paris Olympics were revealed on Tuesday.

The always-impressive Americans will take on Belgium, Japan and Germany in Group C as they look to secure their eighth-straight gold medal.

Meanwhile, Group A features World No. 2 China taking on Serbia, Spain and Puerto Rico.

The full groups for the 12-country opening stage of the Olympics were revealed on a YouTube FIBA broadcast, with Australian legend Penny Taylor drawing the groups from the women’s tourney.

Canada qualified for the Olympics after finishing third in a qualifying tournament in Hungary back in February. Canada went 1-2 in the four-team event but received a helping hand when Spain defeated Hungary in the final game of the competition.

This is their eighth appearance at the Olympics.

They were drawn according to a pot system based on each team’s global ranking and geography. Canada’s women are ranked fifth in the world and were put into a pot with the fourth-ranked Spain and sixth-ranked Belgium.

After playing against one another in the group stage, the top two teams from each group and the two best third-place teams will move on to the quarterfinals. The tournament will then follow a simple knockout stage format.

The group stage will take place in Lille, France.

It will all tip off on Sunday, July 28, and the women’s gold medal game is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11 at Bercy Arena in Paris.
