With the home crowd behind them as they began their push to make history, Team Canada found a way to rally.
The Canadian men’s national team tied Honduras, 1-1, in its opening match of the final round of Concacaf World Cup qualifying on Thursday night at BMO Field.
The draw did not come without drama.
Canada fell behind in the first half after a penalty kick was successfully converted by Alexander Lopez.
Undeterred, Canada applied consistent pressure throughout the second half — and was rewarded.
Cyle Larin found the back of the net, this goal coming on a penalty kick as well, to tie the game at one. With the tally, his 19th ever, Larin joined Dale Mitchell in second place on the all-time men’s national team goal-scoring list.
As time wound down, it was Canada’s keeper, Milan Borjan, who stood tall with a remarkable save to keep the game even at one.
