Canada’s hopes of making a comeback against Argentina in Tuesday’s Copa America semifinal took a huge hit midway through the second half.
Alphonso Davies, Canada’s captain, was forced to exit the game in the 71st minute after he was on the receiving end of a hard tackle from Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel.
After the tackle, Davies immediately went down holding his right leg and received treatment from the Canadian training staff. There was no foul called on Montiel’s tackle.
Davies originally tried to play through the injury, but was then subbed off minutes later and replaced by Jonathan Osorio.
The 23-year-old Canadian star left the game with Canada trailing 2-0 against the No. 1 ranked country in the world.
If the Canadians are unable to pull off the comeback, they will take on the loser of the other semifinal between Uruguay and Columbia in the third-place game on Saturday.
Prior to exiting Tuesday, Davies had played every minute in Canada’s first four games of the tournament.
