Canada’s Andre De Grasse has qualified for the final of the men’s 100-metre race at the Tokyo Olympics.
De Grasse ran a 9.98 out of Lane 6 Sunday morning to move on to the final race which is expected to start at 8:50 a.m. ET. He finished second in the first semifinal heat behind Fred Kerley of the United States who ran a 9.96 and seventh overall.
The 26-year-old posted a Heat 5 best time of 9.91 on Saturday to earn a spot in the semifinal.
The Ontario native is looking for his fourth career Olympic medal. He earned bronze in the 100-metre race in Rio, as well as in the men’s 4×100 relay. De Grasse also won silver in the men’s 200-metre event in 2016.
Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin still hold the Canadian record in the 100-metre event with a time of 9.84. This is the first Summer Games without Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt who has won the 100 and 200 in the past three Olympics.
