Canada’s Kingsbury takes silver in moguls at Beijing Olympics

Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury has won a silver medal in moguls at the Beijing Olympics.

Kingsbury fell just short of defending his title, finishing with 82.18 points on Saturday. Walter Wallberg of Sweden, the final skier, beat out Kingsbury with 83.23 points.

It was the second medal for Canada on the first full day of competition. Earlier, long-track speedskater Isabelle Weidemann won bronze in the women’s 3,000 metres.

Like Kingsbury, Weidemann was in first before the final run on the ice with both Irene Schouten of the Netherlands (gold) and Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida beating out the Canadian.

Kingsbury has now sandwiched an Olympic gold in PyeongChang in 2018 with silvers in Sochi and Beijing. He is the first Canadian freestyle skier to have won three Olympic medals.

The Canadian won the qualifying round on Thursday, finished first in the opening round of finals on Saturday and then placed second in the second round, earning him a berth in the six-person super final.

A 29-year-old native of Deux-Montagnes, Que., Kingsbury has had a spectacular career. He has won gold 71 times on the World Cup circuit and has made 101 trips to the podium.

Kingsbury was named Canada’s athlete of the year in 2018 after winning the Olympic crown.

More to come.
