Canada’s Maude Charron wins gold in weightlifting at Tokyo Olympics

Canadian Maude Charron has won the gold medal in the 64-kilogram weight class at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 28-year-old is Canada’s first Olympic weightlifting medal since Christine Girard won gold in 2012.

The Rimouski, Que., native is the reigning champion of both the Commonwealth Games and Pan American championships. She also set new continental records for the 64-kilogram weight class in snatch (107kg), clean and jerk (133kg) and total (240kg) back in April.

As the third-ranked weightlifter, Charron was a serious threat to reach the podium with two of the top weightlifters pulling out including defending Olympic champion Deng Wei of China and four-time European champion Loredana Toma of Romania.
