Capitals’ Logan Thompson: Team Canada ‘never reached out’ for 4 Nations Face-Off spot

While Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster was announced in early December, there’s still a chance for players to join on an emergency basis in the event of injury.

However, one of the league’s hottest goaltenders doesn’t think he’ll be getting a call.

Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson, in an appearance on The FAN Hockey Show on Wednesday, said he hasn’t heard from Canadian team management.

“They never reached out to me and that didn’t upset me,” Thompson said. “It didn’t surprise me when I was left off the team.”

Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues, Adin Hill of the Vegas Golden Knights and Sam Montembeault of the Montreal Canadiens are the three goalies on Canada’s roster.

“If there was to be an injury, I know I probably won’t get that call, and that’s OK,” Thompson added. “They’ve got their guys, and I just hope that Canada goes out there and wins it all.”

Thompson is third in wins behind only Jake Oettinger and Vezina Trophy-favourite Connor Hellebuyck, while boasting a career-best .925 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against average.

The league-leading Capitals don’t have any players set to appear at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Thompson, 27, said that the team is using it as motivation for the rest of the season.

“I’m just having so much fun,” Thompson said. “I think we all were a bit surprised with how good and strong our team has been to not have one guy represent their nation, so I think that fuels us as a whole to keep this thing going.”

Thompson won a Stanley Cup with Hill and the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023 before being acquired by the Capitals on June 29, 2024, in exchange for two third-round picks.

After playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL from 2014-18, Thompson went undrafted and spent time with the Brock Badgers in the U Sports circuit. He played two seasons in the ECHL before signing his first contract with the Golden Knights in 2020.
