Capitals’ Ovechkin passes Sakic for 10th on all-time NHL points list

Welcome to the top 10, Alexander Ovechkin.

The Washington Capitals star officially passed Hall of Famer Joe Sakic for 10th all-time on the NHL’s points list on Thursday.

Ovechkin’s four-point showing — which included his 33rd career hat trick — against the Montreal Canadiens brought him to 1,643 for his career, eclipsing Sakic’s 1,641.

“The Great 8” is no stranger to the NHL’s all-time ranks, already No. 1 in goals after surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s long-held mark of 894 last season.

Ovechkin’s trio of scores in Washington’s 8-4 win over Montreal on Thursday extended his lead atop that list with 906 goals and counting. He’s also now just the sixth player in league history to record a hat trick after turning 40.

He officially passed Sakic with his second goal of the night — wiring in a cross-ice pass from Dylan Strome — before adding an empty-netter for good measure to secure the hat trick.

The 40-year-old has 10 goals and 10 assists through 21 games for the 11-8-2 Capitals this season.

He’s now one of just two active players in the top 10 on the NHL’s all-time points list, right behind Sidney Crosby, who’s still 65 points ahead of Ovechkin with 1,708. Crosby is just 16 points away from passing fellow Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux for the eighth spot.
