In a battle of aces, the Seattle Mariners came out on top.
Luis Castillo pitched 7.1 innings of shutout baseball and the Mariners jumped on Alek Manoah early to win Game 1 of this American League Wild Card series 1-0.
Game 2 is Saturday at 4:07 p.m. ET at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Manoah, coming off being named AL Pitcher of the Month for September, allowed four runs over 5.2 innings in his post-season debut.
The Mariners grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI double from Eugenio Suarez and a two-run home run by Cal Raleigh. Suarez knocked in a fourth run off a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning.
Earlier in the day, the Guardians beat the Rays and the Phillies rallied past the Cardinals. The Mets will host the Padres later tonight.
