‘Charging?’: Hockey fans react to controversial penalty on Canucks’ Pettersson

The officiating in the Vancouver CanucksEdmonton Oilers series has been a hot topic through the first four games.

And after a controversial call on Thursday, you can bet it will be again following the outcome of Game 5.

With the Canucks on the power play, a hard-charging Warren Foegele was on the forecheck for the Oilers when he came into contact with a stationary Elias Pettersson.

Pettersson turned his back to Foegele and gave a little jump as the two players collided. Foegele fell to the ice and the officials quickly blew the whistle to asses a charging penalty to Pettersson.

Rule 42.1 of the NHL Rulebook states that a “minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner.”

But there was no rulebook at Rogers Arena, and many Canucks fans voiced their displeasure with the call and even threw debris onto the ice.

They weren’t alone, as many hockey fans on social media disagreed with the call.

Here are some of the best reactions.
