Dakota Johnson Just Wore the Autumn Outfit I'm Copying Head to Toe

I have to admit, I don’t look to celebrities all that often for style guidance. Despite the fact that I love poring over red carpet pictures and I’ll be endlessly enthralled and delighted by what avant garde A listers choose to wear for a casual date night (Rihanna, I’m talking about you), in general, I just don’t connect with the über-luxury and perfectly styled finish you’ll get from most famous women in the spotlight. However, one actress that does always pique my interest is Dakota Johnson. She has a very laid back approach to dressing for her public appearances, and while she can dial up the va-va-voom for Venice Film Festival, she’s equally adept at flinging on a cool jacket, pair of jeans and flat boots, creating the kind of outfits one could actually recreate quite easily. In the same vein as, say, Kate Moss or Sienna Miller, there’s something very effortless about her outlook, and with it often leaning into the 1970s, her vintage-tinged aesthetic is always present whether or not that’s deemed to be en vogue at the time. And that is surely the definition of true personal style: staying true to one’s likes, regardless of what’s offered to you.

It helps, of course, that what’s being offered to Johnson is a truckload of Gucci. She’s become quite the ambassador for the brand over the past few years and it’s clear that her innately retro look is a perfect fit for this brand’s vision under creative director, Alessandro Michele. And in Colorado yesterday, for the indie film festival Telluride, Johnson had a macramé GG-logo blouse, tinted shades (two pairs, no less) and a monogram bag all from the Italian fashion house. She combined the ’70s-inspired pieces with a suede jacket from Nili Lotan (the connoisseur’s choice when it comes to suede jackets), a more modern denim silhouette—barrel leg—and Balenciaga’s classic Ceinture boots. All in all, it’s a perfect autumn look that can be replicated, even if you don’t have a Gucci-sized budget.

She then swapped the suede jacket into an after-dark look with a rust-coloured slip dress, big gold hoops and retro runners, proving that once you find your perfect autumn cover-up, the outfit options are endless. Keep scrolling to see the two Dakota Johnson looks I’d like to copy this season.
