Dakota Johnson's Wardrobe Is a Masterclass in Styling Simple Black Trousers

It widely acknowledged in the Who What Wear office that Dakota Johnson is currently on a winning style streak. From her easily replicated outfit formulas to her impeccable taste in accessories, we wait with bated breath for her next outfit, and her promotional tour wardrobe has given us enough inspiration to pour over for next few months.

It was scrolling though some of her most stylish recent looks for the Netflix Persuasion tour that I couldn’t help but notice that all of her best outfits had one thing in common–a classic black trouser. Although most of us will admit to owning a pair or two, there isn’t much excitement surrounding tailored black trousers. Sure, they’re functional, and yes, we probably bought them to wear in the office, but when is the last time we were truly excited to wear them? I would have struggled to answer that, up until the moment I saw Dakota walking through the streets of Tribeca in a co-ord from The Andamane and some decidedly huge wide–leg trousers. And now I need a pair.

Fresh proof that every capsule wardrobe should have some, Dakota managed to show no less than 5 different ways to wear a black trouser, so whether your favourite fit is the wide–leg, the kick flare, the crop or even black denim, there will be an outfit that works for you. So dig out that pair of black trousers from the back of your wardrobe, and scroll on to shop pieces inspired by Johnson’s recent outfits.

Ever since Katie Holmes singlehandedly ignited a love for the bra–digan, we’ve changed the way we thought about the humble knit. Forget the old fashioned twin set, the knitted crop top and matching cardigan has become one of the chicest off–duty celeb looks. Take notes from Dakota’s recent outing and pair an ultra wide–leg trouser with a midriff baring top to emphasise the waist.

A soft, cashmere set makes an easy outfit with endless pairings–wide leg trousers, a satin midi skirt, straight leg jeans, a column maxi skirt, just take your pick.

High–waisted and super wide, these voluminous trousers have strategic tailoring to get the slouch fit just right.

Add lift with a simple heeled mule.

We can always count on Dakota to show her spin on classic tailoring, and although we aren’t necessarily reaching for a tie as we get ready for work, the choice of velvet is inspired. To make this look summer–ready, we’re pairing a classic white shirt with a velvet trouser and an open sandal for a dinner or party look.

If you’re looking for the perfect, relaxed fit white shirt, we just found it.

A straight legged cut, but loose, flowing fit with plenty of movement.

A subtle and understated hoop made from recycled silver.

Oh white t–shirts, how we do love you. Although the tank top is everywhere this summer, the versatility of the tee cannot be denied. A case in point, the simplicity of Dakota’s tried and tested t–shirt and jeans pairing, but this time around in dressier black denim.

We’re predicting suede jackets are about to make a stylish comeback for autumn/winter.

A Who What Wear editor favourite.

I’ve lost track of how many times Totême jeans have been recommended to me for their curve accommodating fit.

Dakota’s exact Gucci Princetown Loafers are in high demand (and incredibly low stock), but the Brixton are a 2–in–1 alternative that look just as good.

After all of Dakota’s tailoring inspiration, there was guaranteed to be another good suit. This time around, a gold buttoned, double–breasted blazer with a flared trouser. The perfect accessory to a power suit? Retro sunnies of course.

A slightly cropped jacket to pair with a high rise trouser.

A pair of classic, black suit trousers deserve a place in every capsule wardrobe.

Add skyscraper platforms to a wide legged suit to add vintage flair.

A pair of sunglasses you’ll buy now, but wear for every summer to come.

They’re the It shoe we can’t stop thinking about, and if you too were wondering just how to wear a crystal slingback, Dakota just solved the dilemma. Another great suit from her also inspired our seasonal take on  a head–to–toe monochrome look that won’t be hot to handle.

The (designer) cinderella shoes of dreams.

Make the most of wearing a sleeveless top with some serious arm candy.
