Ducks acquiring Chris Kreider from Rangers for pick, prospect

Chris Kreider’s time in the Big Apple has come to an end.

The New York Rangers are trading the long-time forward to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for centre Carey Terrance and a 2025 third-round draft pick, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports. The Ducks will also get back their own 2025 fourth-round draft pick that they sent to New York for Jacob Trouba in the trade.

The third-rounder headed to the Rangers originally belonged to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The deal couldn’t be completed until Kreider agreed to waive his no-trade clause, which he did Thursday morning. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff was first to report the agreement Tuesday night, while Larry Brooks of The New York Post was first to report the no-trade clause had been waived.

The 34-year-old Kreider scored 22 goals and registered eight assists over 68 games last season as New York missed the playoffs. He missed time due to an upper-body injury.

Kreider’s best season came in 2021-22, when the left-shot winger buried 52 goals in 81 games.

He enters next season in the sixth year of a seven-year, $45.5 million contract signed in 2020. The deal carries an annual average value of $6.5 million. Seravalli reported that the Ducks will take on the rest of Kreider’s contract in full as part of the deal.

Kreider was originally drafted out of Boston College 19th overall by the Rangers in 2009 and made his NHL debut in the 2012-13 campaign. He’s since played in 883 games for the franchise (eighth-most in team history) through 13 seasons. Kreider leaves New York ranked third all-time in goals (326), tied for first in power-play goals (116), second in game-winning goals (50) and 10th in total points (582).

He also brings 123 games of playoff experience to a young Anaheim team, having helped New York reach the post-season on 10 separate occasions while recording 48 goals and 76 points. He scored five goals in New York’s trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

Anaheim is coming off a season in which it missed the playoffs with 80 points. In early May, the Ducks hired Joel Quenneville to take over as the 12th head coach in franchise history.

The Ducks feature a young forward group, which includes the likes of Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier — all of whom breached the 20-goal threshold last season.

Terrance, 20, was a second-round pick of the Ducks in 2023. He just completed his fourth season with the OHL’s Erie Otters, in which he scored 20 goals and 39 points in 45 games while serving as captain. Terrance also won gold with the United States at the 2025 World Juniors, scoring two goals in the tournament.
