Somehow, someway, DeVonta Smith made Alabama history with his third-quarter score in Super Bowl LIX.
It was one of the more unbelievable streaks in sports today — given the Crimson Tide’s track record in developing NFL talent — but no player to finish their collegiate career at Alabama had ever scored a rushing or a receiving touchdown in a Super Bowl.
At least, that was the case until Smith caught a 46-yard bomb from quarterback Jalen Hurts to put the Philadelphia Eagles up 34-0.
Although Hurts did spend three years at Alabama and scored on the ground thrice in the big game two years ago before opening the scoring with a ‘Tush Push’ in the first quarter Sunday, he transferred to Oklahoma for his final season in the NCAA, entering the NFL as a Sooner grad.
Smith’s big play was his fourth catch of the game, taking him to 69 yards against Kansas City’s defence.
If the Eagles can hold on, Smith will become just the fourth player to win a National Championship, Heisman and Super Bowl.
He would join Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, and Charles Woodson in the prestigious group.
Smith won the Heisman Trophy as college football’s top player in 2020 and National titles with Alabama in 2017 and 2020. He was named the offensive MVP of the Championship game in 2020.
