Canada’s Bianca Andreescu paused to wipe away tears while talking about her support team after the Bad Homburg Open final.
Andreescu finished runner-up after losing 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 to Caroline Garcia of France on Saturday.
It was Andreescu’s first grass-court final and her first final in over a year. The 2019 U.S. Open champion took time off to recover from injuries and focus on her mental health before returning to the tour in April.
“My team, I wouldn’t be here without you guys. All the support that you’ve given me,” an emotional Andreescu said while addressing the crowd. “You guys stuck with me through the toughest moments and that’s all anyone could ever ask for, so thank you.”
Andreescu, who defeated top-seeded Daria Kasatkina in the quarterfinals, advanced directly to the final after Simona Halep was forced to withdraw from the semis due to a neck injury.
“It was great tennis and a point here or there but I had a great week overall,” Andreescu said. “I’m super happy with how my game is evolving on the grass. It’s my first final on grass. A lot of progress happening, so I’m pleased.”
The 22-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., now prepares for Wimbledon and faces American qualifier Emina Bektas in the first round next week.
“I’m very happy, it’s been a couple rough years but I’m putting in the work and onto the next,” Andreescu said. “I’m excited for Wimbledon now.”
