Five To Watch: Weidemann, Jones back on Olympic ice for Day 6

After two relatively light days for Team Canada, action heats up on Day 6 of the Beijing Olympics.

When many Canadians wake up on Thursday, they’ll have three compelling events as viewing options.

And before many Canadians go to bed on Wednesday, Canada’s youngest Olympian will make a bid for a medal and one of the marquee events of the Games, the men’s figure skating free skate (8:30 p.m. ET), will take centre stage.

Here’s a look at five key Canadian storylines:

Editor’s note: All events are Thursday Eastern Time unless otherwise noted.

Brooke D’Hondt
Women’s snowboard halfpipe final, 8:30 p.m. ET (Wednesday)
Canada’s youngest Olympian earned one of 12 spots in the final by finishing 10th in qualifying. The 16-year-old Calgarian is joined in the final by fellow Canadian Elizabeth Hosking.

Eliot Grondin
Men’s snowboard cross, 1:30-3 a.m.
The 20-year-old native of Sainte-Marie, Que., won bronze in this event at the world championships last year. He has two World Cup medals this season.

Isabelle Weidemann
Long-track speedskating women’s 5,000 metres, 7 a.m.
The Ottawa skater looks for her second medal of the Games after winning bronze in the 3,000 metres. Weidemann was fourth in the 5,000 at the World Single Distances Championships last year.

Jennifer Jones
Women’s curling, vs. South Korea, 7:05 a.m.
The Winnipeg skip has a tough matchup in the opener as she faces Eun-Jung Kim and the South Korean “Garlic Girls.” The South Koreans won silver at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The 47-year-old Jones, Canada’s oldest Olympian, won gold in 2014 in Sochi.

Canadian men’s hockey team
vs. Germany, 8:10 a.m.
Canada begins a second straight non-NHL men’s hockey competition against a familiar foe as Germany upset the Canadians in the 2018 semifinals. This year’s Canadian team is headlined by NHL veteran Eric Staal and Buffalo Sabres’ No. 1 overall pick Owen Power.
