Going to an October Wedding? Here Are 6 Outfits You Can Always Rely On

I’m a firm believer that autumn is the most romantic season. Given my belief that it’s the best season overall, I might be a little biased, but surely you agree: browning leaves and crisp, cosy evenings form a fairytale backdrop for blossoming love. Ok, I’ll admit, Nora Ephron definitely gets some of the credit when it comes to this theory but I’m all for it.

It makes sense then (at least to me, an autumn obsessive) that many couples would schedule their nuptials during this special time of year. May to August might be peak wedding season, but September and October are also popular months to tie the knot. And given that this is typically a period of adjusting to colder weather and the layers it necessitates, the question of what to wear to an autumn wedding can often be difficult to answer.

Certain fabrics, silhouettes and colourways are far better suited to an autumn ceremony than a summer one—and with the help of some of our favourite influencers, we’ve deciphered exactly which variations are safe bets. So, before you panic about the possibility of a chilly church and reach for the nearest faux fur coat, scroll down to see six easy and stylish October-friendly wedding looks.

Style Notes: As a big fan of mini dresses, seeing so many of them this season has been a delight. Choose an organza fabrication to keep your dress feeling formal, then pair it with sheer tights and heeled Mary Janes.

The sleeves are reason enough to say ‘yes’ to this dress.

Wear these trending heels into party season.

The perfect piece to pull out on special occasions.

Style Notes: It’s true that certain shades are off-limits for weddings, but no one’s said anything about lime green. Opt for a matching set that’s bright, comfortable and suitable for hitting the dancefloor.

This shimmery shirt would also look great with black leather trousers.

The most perfect party pants I’ve ever seen.

Bottega Veneta is always our first port of call when shopping for evening bags. This style is an investment, but one you’re sure to love forever.

Style Notes: Pale pink or blue florals might look out of place at this time of year, but darker blooms are an appropriate choice for an autumn/winter wedding. Wear a midi-length dress and chuck on a blazer if it’s cloudy.

Autumn in dress form. Any fabric from silk and velvet to satin and chiffon work well for this style.

A staple for upcoming weddings and beyond.

The heel on this sandal is low enough to wear all day and night.

Style Notes: Silk is an excellent choice for a wedding whichever season it falls in, but it feels particularly special in the lead-up to the festive season. Choose a seasonal hue and slip into a pair of matching heels.

This slip dress is made from sustainably-sourced silk.

Go for gold if you want to add extra sparkle to your wedding guest look.

I love a fun, sequin bag for an evening wedding.

Style Notes: Jacquard is to autumn what chiffon is to summer. Slightly heavier yet still on the smarter end of the fabric spectrum, this is a fail-safe option for October nuptials.

Ganni strikes again on the dress front. I also like the idea of styling this seafoam number with thick-soled boots.

If there’s ever an occasion to wear a vintage beaded bag, it’s a wedding.

Give me a platform heel and I’ll dance all night long.

Style Notes: A tailored suit looks polished every time, especially in camel, sand and rust tones. Plus, it’s a versatile buy that will work for countless other occasions. Keep the accessories minimal for an understated wedding look.

Reiss’ tailoring is so classic—expect to reach for this suit time and time again.

Switch out the heels for trainers on the weekends.

The slouchy clutch trend is here to stay. I love the shape and exaggerated tassels on this vegan style.
