The Carolina Hurricanes are heading back to the Eastern Conference Final.
Carolina got a late goal from Andrei Svechnikov to push past the Washington Capitals, 3-1, in Game 5 Thursday night, punching a ticket to the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2023.
After both teams scored in the contest’s opening period, the game continued tied at one until the Hurricanes broke through with the winner with 1:59 remaining.
Jordan Staal also scored for Carolina, and Anthony Beauvillier was the lone Capital to find the back of the net. Seth Jarvis sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
Washington heads home after finishing the regular season as the East’s top point-getter.
The Hurricanes, meanwhile, will await the winner of the second-round series between the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs.
More to come.
