I Bought One Oversize Shirt and Got 5 Easy Outfits Out of It

When I buy clothes, I do so with versatility in mind. I’ve always been tentative with money, so although my job as a fashion editor certainly makes shopping regularly a tempting prospect, I only invest in something when it truly warrants it. This season, I decided to treat myself to a linen shirt-and-shorts set, as, like so many others, I hadn’t updated my holiday wares in a few years. I opted for a two-piece from Deiji Studios, thinking I could maximise its wearability by splitting the top and shorts up to create new looks.

Although the shorts have come in handy, it’s the oversized, slouchy shirt that I’ve really gotten the best cost per wear out of. I wear a lot of fitted pieces, as I find they tend to suit my curvy frame better, but this oversize shirt has been a godsend—particularly on the balmy summer days we’ve been experiencing. Never did I think I’d get so much use out of one, so I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite ensembles I’ve been able to create with my oversize shirt.

Most of the pieces I’m wearing in the looks below are old and out of stock (as I said, I’m an infrequent spender), but I’ve found the chicest alternatives to suit. While my shirt is part of a set, I think Arket has created a pretty impressive one, which I’ve peppered below for you also. Continue on to see how to style an oversized shirt, as told by an editor who rates versatility above all else.

Style Notes: I, like everyone else, have fallen hard for wide-leg trousers this season. Why favourite way to style them? With chunky sandals and a bra top layered under an open shirt.

If I didn’t already own one as part of my set, this is the shirt I’d snap up.

My bra top doesn’t seem to be available anymore, but I rate all the styles from H&M.

My belt is old from Zara, but when I get around to upgrading it, I’m heading straight for this Anderson’s number.

These also come in tan.

I get so much wear out of my Dune leather flip-flops; if you’re looking for a current pair, I’d suggest these, as Russell & Bromley is synonymous with quality.

Style Notes: Making the most of my investment, I’ve made my co-ord look the city part with a Breton-stripe tee, the same leather sandals as above and a chic canvas tote.

Hands down, the best addition to my wardrobe this year.

Not a day goes by when I don’t wear my Monica Vinader hoops.

Breton stripes are timeless.

Everlane is my new go-to for basics, including accessories.

If you’re looking for a more frugal alternative to the above sandals, this M&S pair can’t be bettered.

Style Notes: Most days, you’ll find me in skirts or dresses (more on the latter in the second), and my current go-to look involves a linen shirt and a vest top.

This shirt comes in so many colours—take your pick!

I always turn to H&M for affordable jersey basics.

I’ve had my & Other Stories skirt for four years, but this Nobody’s Child alternative looks just as good.

I’m in love with my Muuñ basket bag. Is that weird?

The gold buckles add polish to the classic Birkenstock Arizona sandal.

Style Notes: Jeans and kitten heels are the things I reach for when I’m rushing out to a meeting or dinner with friends and I’ve inevitably left myself too little time to get ready. Throw an oversized shirt into the mix, and you’ve mastered the smart/casual dress code.

So many influencers I know also own this Deiji Studios set.

My husband gave me this necklace for my birthday two years ago, and I’ve barely taken it off since.

This handbag is on my wish list.

I recommend sizing down in this pair, as it’s super stretchy.

These look so much more expensive than they actually are.

Style Notes: I like to keep even my evening outfits low-key. Right now, I’m obsessed with knotting my oversized shirt over slip and fitted dresses.

The curved hem loans itself perfectly to knotting, as it has less bulk when tied in place.

I get so many compliments whenever I wear this Ghost dress.

A recent addition to my jewellery collection.

Shoulder bags have the power to elevate any outfit.

My Whistles sandals are—you guessed it!—sold out, but these are just as good.
