I Have The Row Taste But an H&M Budget—9 Trends I'm Investing in This Winter

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a change of season often demands a fashion reset. This winter, there’s plenty of inspiration for fresh sartorial takes, and after more Instagram scrolling that I care to admit, I think I’ve honed in on the key trends that have gone from the runway to the wardrobes of our favourite tastemakers. The good news? You don’t need to have a designer budget to pull them off.

Call it the “quiet-luxury” effect, but elevated staples are the top trend to know this season.

There’s a plethora of trends to explore this season, from the bold to the more understated. For those looking to mix-up their usual go-tos with statement pieces, you’re in luck—metallics, sensually sheer styles and shocks of red are all top looks this season. As someone who’s not usually too distracted by trends, especially in the cold months, I was pleased to see that a lot of classics have come back as certified trends, which is a great counter-balance to the more extravagant looks. Elevated essentials that embrace the “quiet luxury” aesthetic and timeless shoe styles like knee-high boots and loafers are just some of the looks that are popping up more and more on my Instagram feed.

Whichever trend catches your eye, you don’t have to worry that it’s going to break the bank. High street favourites like Mango, H&M and COS have become experts at predicting and recreating top runway and street style trends at a much more attainable price-point. Here, I’ve gathered the affordable winter trends I’m planning to wear all season long and beyond. You’re welcome!

Style Notes: Minimalists, rejoice—understated, effortlessly chic pieces are in vogue this season, and the high street has definitely caught onto the trend.

It all starts with a white shirt, and this crisp poplin boyfriend style is a classic.

An equally good shirt, at a fraction of the price.

I’ve always said Marks & Spencer has the best cashmere on the high street, and this season’s line-up doesn’t disappoint.

If you’re tempted to go for the whole suited look, you’ll be happy to hear the blazer is under £100, too.

Black tailored trousers are a wardrobe staple.

Style Notes: From burgundy to tomato, red was the colour that dominated the AW23 runways. Even for the most colour-averse, there’s a stylish way to incorporate the bold tone into your winter wardrobe.

This would look so slick styled with a black blazer and heels.

This will brighten up the greyest winter days.

For those who like a bit of volume.

These deep burgundy cords are a brilliant red-tone entry point.

I love the deep red tone of this velvet number, which would be perfect for festive season celebrations.

I’m obsessed with this colour, and the slouchy silhouette.

For those who really just want to dip their toe in the trend…

A slip skirt is a truly versatile wardrobe piece.

Style Notes: On the softer end of the trending colour spectrum is butter yellow. Pale, cosy and a welcome sunny tone in the midst of the winter months.

I love the neckline on this cable-knit jumper.

I’d style this with a leather blazer.

This looks so chic when paired with black pieces.

These have a certain French charm.

This would look great with knee-high boots.

Style Notes: It’s time to step into the spotlight. Fusing together rock’n’roll and Y2K references, metallics are well and truly back. Feeling bold? Try styling yours with black knitwear and knee-high boots for metallics-by-day.

Who wouldn’t want to wear liquid gold?

The matte sequins create such a cool effect.

Wear with jeans, skirts, tailored trousers, dresses—kitten heels do it all.

Just a hint of shimmer.

This playsuit is destined for the dance floor.

If I were you, I’d get the matching trousers, too.

Inject a burst of metallic colour with this statement clutch.

Style Notes: Turns out, florals aren’t just for spring. Dark, romantic and vintage-inspired is the new season way to bring garlands into your winter wardrobe.

I’d style this with knee-high black boots and a long cosy coat.

This limited edition skirt looks like a designer piece.

Impossibly elegant.

Style with black leather trousers for a slick evening look.

I love the idea of wearing this entire set as an alternative evening wear look.

Perfect for winter weddings.

Also ticking off the red trend box.

Style Notes: Camille Charriere is the queen of sheer. Take a page out of her fashion book and embrace the unapologetic sensuality of sheer styles.

This is such an elegant take on the sheer trend.

Miu Miu had every influencer proudly wearing underwear as outerwear—this sheer skirt is a great way to lean into the trend.

A subtly sheer top that’s perfect for a night out.

This gets bonus points for being made from deadstock mesh fabric.

For those who want to shimmer.

Layer with tailored trousers for a slinky evening look.

A half-sheer shirt for those dipping their toe into the trend.

I’m obsessed with this dress, which is another subtle way to nod to the trend.

Style Notes: It’s official: wide-leg is the jean style of the season. Pair with white t-shirts and jackets like Lucy, chunky knits or an oversized button-down shirt.

The deep blue gives these organic cotton jeans a vintage feel.

I love the seam detailing on these.

Such a Seventies vibe.

I’m a big fan of white jeans in winter.

Ideal for those who like a cropped cut.

The perfect pair of black jeans.

A super slouchy, Nineties-inspired style.

Style Notes: This season, the taller the boot, the better.

A sharp boot you’ll turn to for years to come.

The croc-effect will add a touch of texture to a simple look.

Cowboy boots will always be in style, and these are a classic, versatile version.

I love the Sixties style of a tall white boot.

Embrace the preppiness of a riding boot.

The stretch fit on the back means this should work for every calf size.

Style Notes: Boots may be tall this season, but all other footwear should be flat. Loafers, ballet pumps, mules—take your pick.

These velvet flats would work equally well for day and night.

A chunky loafer adds the perfect lift.

Simple, understated, classic.

These definitely exude Parisian charm.

An easy ballet flat for an amazing price.

The chain detail really elevates these patent leather loafers.
