There’s no doubt that gender-orientated perfumes should be a thing of the past. Scents shouldn’t be assigned “male” or “female” because, arguably, all fragrances are unisex. It’s completely subjective, as our olfactory nerves will tell us what we like and don’t like regardless of how we identify. However, there are some incredible scents out there that are considered more “unisex” than others. While I’m quite the fan of what would be considered “feminine” fragrances—Diptyque’s Eau Rose is one of my favourites—I have a soft spot for the “unisex” fragrance. It all started, of course, with CK One way back in the ’90s. But more recently, it was Glossier’s You perfume that launched in 2017 that really turned my head. It is warm and creamy, moulds itself to your own personal scent, which is why it’s described as a “skin enhancer” instead of a perfume, and has the effect of getting you to move closer to the person who’s wearing it just so you can get an even better whiff.
Now, I’m not saying that’s the case with all similar fragrances, but if Glossier’s idea of a unisex perfume has you intrigued, allow me to list some of my favourites. Quite often with unisex fragrances, you’ll find more smoky notes and sandalwood and citrus scents in there. Keep scrolling to see my selection of the unisex fragrances I can’t get enough of.

Similar to Glossier (although this came first) Escentric Molecules’ Molecule 01 creates a unique scent when applied. Intriguing.
Anything I’ve ever smelt from this brand has only been brilliant. And it’s never been overpoweringly sweet—a true sign of sophistication in my books. Also, my husband is a real fan of this, too.
Notes of bergamot combine with chilli and warm notes of wood and myrrh. Delicious.
“Hypnotising” and “unique” is how this fragrance is described. It is musky with notes of jasmine.
Notes of amber and vanilla make this a soft perfume with a little bit of spice.
Don’t overlook the high street when it comes to perfumes. Every one of Arket’s home fragrances is potent but suitable for everyone. This Oakmoss Perfume Oil is deep and earthy.
Created with the ultimate British perfumer, Jo Malone, this is a mix of pink peppercorn, clove, and ebony wood.
Fresh lemon and ginger bring a fresh scent to the woody depth of moss and amber.
This is a light fragrance for everyone with notes of vetiver. If you want something stronger, you can layer other fragrances over the top.
Think florals aren’t gender-neutral? Think again. This smells like a garden but is crisp and light.
