I Searched Through Thousands of Wool Coats—These Are the High Street's Best

I’m in the market for a new coat but I have some firm non-negotiable stipulations ahead of purchasing. Firstly, my next coat cannot be super-expensive but it must be premium and long-lasting. It absolutely has to be a classic style that I won’t bore of by next winter—I’ve bought into trending styles before and lived to regret it. I’d like it to feel more fancy than the puffer I’ve lived in for the past few winters, and, whatever style I do end up landing on, it needs to be made of wool because there is no greater fibre option for a piece of outerwear that can remain looking good in your wardrobe for a long, long time to come. So, it seems like my mission this week is to find the best wool coats on the high street, and I think my discoveries will be relevant for many of you reading…

@theindiaedit wearing a belted wool coat from & Other Stories last year which has been re-released for 2022. The weather has turned enough for coats to be a consideration—they aren’t yet essential but the most coveted versions are selling out. In fact, they’ve been selling strongly since August, as is tradition! What’s been flying off the virtual rails? Neutral hues like camel, beige and biscuit have been very popular and with an affordable price-tag they can still look incredibly luxe. Oversized styles are proving to be the shape of our times—perfect for layering up with knits underneath when the temperatures require it. Belted fastens are timeless but omnipresent, flattering too. If you can find something with a shawl collar or an in-built scarf you’ll have an iteration that feels more on-trend for now, but these details have remained stylish for many decades now. So, there are a few stores that are doing this better than most on the high street. From & Other Stories to Mango, M&S to Zara, here I’ve edited the best wool coats from each affordable shop to make things a little easier.

This looks just as grey buttoned up with the belt fastened too—so smart.

This belted style has sold out in many other colourways (hopefully to be restocked soon) but the grey has just landed.

Herringbone weaves are having yet another moment.

This coat has a whopping amount of 4.5 star reviews—not bad for a high-street coat.

A few people in the team have this beauty, and it’s just as lovely IRL.

I love this rich autumnal hue—it looks much more expensive than it is.

This stunner also has a thick woolen belt so you can wrap up and cinch away!

If a neutral tone doesn’t float your boat, I promise you’ll get a lot of wear out of a bright red coat.

This is a wool-mix fabric and a slightly lighter-weight option.

I adore a double-faced wool coat—so sumptuous.

This slate-blue is a great option for minimalists who don’t want a basic black coat.

This incredible-looking scarf-jacket is from COS’s new Atelier collection.

This belted style is a faultless classic.

This collarless style is very understated and chic.

M&S also stock some brands who do great coats, such as Jaeger..

There’s something so preppy about this collar and forest-green colour—I love it.

If you find that beige usually washes you out, this warmer tone might be the answer.

It’s giving me school coat vibes, and I don’t mind it! Next up,
