I'm a Fashion Editor, and I'm Living in These 4 Easy Outfits From ARKET

I love this time of year. It’s sunny, the days are long, ice lollies are aplenty and there’s a “school’s out” energy in the air. Of course, we all enjoy the prospect of a holiday, but I’ve always thought that London (and most cities, actually) really comes into its own in August. There’s something about that notion of “summer in the city” that’s so chic. You can spend the weekends bouncing around city neighbourhoods in a satin dress, Aperol spritz in hand, pretending you’re 2022’s answer to Carrie Bradshaw.

That being said, if you’re interested in fashion, you’re no doubt deep into thinking about the upcoming season. Will it be wool coats or puffers? Which boots will be at the top of everyone’s wish lists? In the middle of a heat wave, it can feel strange to think about the cold of winter or that transitional, in-between period. But ARKET’s new pre-fall edit is perfect for those days in between seasons that begin with crisp mornings but descend into warm and occasionally clammy afternoons. The answer? Layered staples that can be styled suitably for every activity.

It’s not a new solution, but it’s a good one. Sticking to a monochromatic palette (which ARKET does so well), the edit considers the season ahead by including denim, blazers and cotton jumpers but is conscious of tropical-like Septembers with a few dresses, vests and a particular pair of open-toe heels that have caught my eye. Although it definitely has a back-to-work vibe, all the pieces are easily made dressy with a change of shoes or a swipe of lipstick. So whether you’re looking for work or weekend essentials, I’ve broken down the very best pieces into four outfit ideas I’ll be depending on until winter hits.

Style notes: Animal print is here to stay for A/W 22, but not so much with brown leopard tones. Instead, the upcoming season is all about zebra stripes. The silhouette of this dress is supremely flattering. Just layer with silver jewellery and some comfortable heels, and you’re good to go.

Style notes: A satin dress is a wardrobe must for me. Between weddings, work and Waitrose, there are many excuses to get out a satin number. I love satin dresses with sneakers and a jumper (which, depending on the fit, can be worn above or below the dress) for casual occasions. They also look fabulously chic with a platform heel and a clutch for something a little more special.

Style notes: If you have a penchant for French-girl style, this one may be for you. I know you’re used to Bretons with horizontal stripes, but alas! ARKET is going vertical with this thick knit jumper, and oui, je’taime! Continue on the neutral palette, and style it with black or off-white denim instead of blue. Opt for a slim ankle boot in place of sneakers for casual dinners or a drink with friends.

Style notes: According to Prada, Gucci, Celine and of course, ARKET, chunky loafers are still having a major moment, and I love it. On warmer days, wear cropped trousers and show the ankle, and when it’s cooler, opt for cashmere socks in a neutral hue, or if you like a pop of colour, see this as an opportunity to pursue that. If you’re at the office, wear an open shirt over the knit vest, and if a dinner date after work arises, simply take off the shirt, layer with a blazer and add a red lip.
