I'm a Fashion Editor, and These Summer-to-Autumn Buys Are in My Basket

When the weather is this glorious, all I want to do is shop. Don’t get me wrong—I like to bask in the sun as much as the next Brit, but if you see me sweating on my sun-lounger scrolling my phone, odds are I’m not reloading Instagram for the 14th time that morning (honestly!) but am in fact scanning the new-in section at MATCHESFASHION.

There’s something about this time of year that really makes me thirsty for newness. We’re in the middle of summer, so whilst sensible summer purchases are still in the cards, a new season is just around the corner.

In light of this, the secret to guilt-free sun-lounger shopping is a simple one: transitional pieces that work in every season. That means a knit vest and some mule-style shoes with closed toes but open backs, like Khaite’s clogs or the Gucci logo slingbacks that are no doubt lingering in your saved folder, too.

But along with the cool cult heroes, there’s an array of elevated staples that keep ending up in my cart. There’s always a slip dress or two (just because they’re so easily layered below a blazer or cardigan), and I’ve recently really gotten into knit dresses (I’m particularly loving the jersey and crochet kind), which I’d argue have a different purpose than a slip—they’re thicker and are therefore ideal for breezy beach days or cooler autumnal morning walks to the office.

A brand that’s always a go-to for all of the above is Gabriela Hearst. Based in New York but born in Uruguay, the brand draws inspiration from the Hearst family’s Latin American ranch, where all the pieces are carefully crafted. Think folky, full-length shawls with tassels, saddle-hook belts and a red, orange and blue palette to reflect the region’s coastlines and landscapes. Gabriella Hearst’s recent capsule with MATCHESFASHION includes a series of exclusive pieces, and its dedication to being environmentally friendly makes it even more exciting. The brand’s carbon footprint is kept to a minimum, and up to 80% of the natural materials used are upcycled and developed from existing stock.

So with that, I share with you my not-so-secret current MATCHESFASHION wish list. Happy scrolling!

Layered up or on its own, this dress can be worn all year round.

The best argument for bringing back the kitten heel is here, and comes courtesy of Gucci.

A trench is a transitional must-have, and nobody does them better than Totême.

Like many, I live in jeans. And nobody does them better than L.A. cult label Re/Done.

You can never have too many raffia totes… right?

I’m obsessed with these sunset hues and lantern sleeves. You’ll see this draped over my shoulders until it’s cold enough to wear properly.

So many clogs, not enough time. If you’re as nostalgic for the ’70s as I am, you will have numerous pairs of clogs in your cart right now.

Another fine knit piece, this time in a mood-boosting hue.

This bag! This colour! I can’t resist.

These days I’m all about beads.

Three words: ombré lace slip.

Not your average slides, these babies are cashmere, so they qualify for the ultra-luxe transitional checklist.

Colourful crochet with bleached denim is a vibe I can get on board with.

I wear tailoring all year round, and the pockets on the sides make these for me.

Rain or shine, you’ll always find a bucket hat in my tote bag. It’s as essential for me as sunglasses.

I’m calling it: Light lenses are everything.

Is there anything more romantic than broderie anglaise?

Style this as if it were a linen blazer or denim jacket because it just happens to be the best blend of both.

Hoops with a bit of a difference? Oh, hello.

I can’t be stopped with crisp white cotton and (as mentioned) broderie anglaise.

Not your average black belt, I’ve had this beauty saved on my wish list for quite some time.

Popsicle-coloured patchwork is a sure way to boost your dopamine levels.
