I'm a Fashion Expert, and This Is How I Wear Knitted Sets

I’m a magpie for warmth; give me a thick-knit jumper and a water bottle and I’m happy. But while I wait for someone to invent a wearable heated blanket, I’ve made it my mission to hunt down the cosiest combinations for this time of year.

So, it isn’t surprising that when I discovered knitted sets, it felt like they had been created especially for me. But it seems the whole of the fashion world has recognised the benefits of these comfy co-ords, because I’ve been spotting them everywhere recently. Not only does double-knit keep you feeling snug (particularly if you opt for a premium material like cashmere), but your outfit will always match. That’s an added bonus for lazy dressers like me.

While my love for knitted sets was instant, I will admit that I initially struggled a little to style them. With some of the top-and-trouser options I tried out, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I looked like I’d stepped out of the house in loungewear. That is until I played around and figured out exactly how to elevate this cold-weather staple.

As always, I looked to Instagram for guidance, and it didn’t disappoint. Check out the polished looks that taught me how to wear knitted sets, below.

Style Notes: My favourite way to wear knitted cardigan-and-top sets is as I would a jumper, with jeans and flats. I’ve found this is a perfect outfit formula for everyday.

Reformation makes my favourite ever knitted tank-and-cardi sets.

These jeans are iconic for a reason—if you’re seeking the perfect relaxed fit, look no further.

We’re banking on the ballet flat renaissance continuing into 2023.

Style Notes: As knitted sets can look quite loungewear-like, I enjoy bringing in some more elevated items like a trench coat to smarten things up.

Chucking on a trench coat is the easiest (and quickest) way to look put-together.

The cold can’t touch you in this cashmere jumper.

Once you put these on, you’ll never want to take them off.

Style Notes: I told you I’m a stickler for staying warm, didn’t I? I’d also add a long wool coat on top of this look, of course.

This olive green shade is great for all seasons.

This piece is so versatile. Wear it buttoned up as a top or open as a cardigan.

Arket’s got all your wardrobe basics covered.

Style Notes: In my opinion, wide-leg trousers work with most things, but I’m partial to dressing them down with sneakers and relaxed knitwear.

Ultra-cropped cardigans like this one are so much fun to style.

These will no doubt sell out quickly, so act fast.

Celebrities love these classic trainers.

Style Notes: On those extra chilly days, I’ve taken to layering a snug shearling jacket over my matching knitwear. It just so happens to be really on-trend, too.

This reminds me of the sell-out Mango coat from earlier in the season.

SKIMS matching sets are as impressive as its shapewear.

How cosy do these look!?

Style Notes: It’s not just trouser and top sets that have caught my eye. Chiara’s knitted dress and cardi two-piece is the perfect balance between cosy and chic, and is certainly what I want to be wearing all winter long. Dress it up for festivities with heels or down with trainers.

A LBD you’ll love forever.

Size up in this to get a slightly more relaxed fit.

For a bit of sparkle…

Style Notes: Knitted sets don’t need to be for weekend lounging, as Rikke proves in her maxi skirt and sweater duo. Add polished accessories including heeled ankle boots and you’re set for work, dinner, lunch and everything else in between.

Wear with the matching skirt below or with jeans, leather trousers or cashmere joggers.

The cosiest skirt I’ve ever seen.

The kind of boots you’ll wear and love forever.
