I'm a Stylist—My Wardrobe Wouldn't Function Without This Simple Piece

The terms “fashion basic” and “style staple” are not always the clearest or the most objective. After all, what is an essential for one person may be a luxury for another. But in my experience, very few people can argue with the fact that tank tops (or vests to us Brits) remain a core part of our wardrobes all year round, particularly during the colder months. An extra layer is never a bad thing and the beloved vest doesn’t interfere with the pieces worn over the top. Whether you prefer to dress yours up with smart, tailored trousers, under a blazer or you’re simply feeling the chill, the tank top is one item of clothing that you’re sure to get plenty of wear of, whatever the season.

While you don’t want to mess with the classics too much (you really can’t go wrong with a white tank top, after all), we’ve really noticed that the tank-top offering this season feels more eclectic than ever.  Meaning you can really pick and choose according to your tastes and wardrobe requirements. I’ve enjoyed the crinkle-effect tops, as seen within the textured styles that you can shop below, as they offer a slightly more elevated spin on the classic tank and will look just as good tucked into jeans as they will with matching trousers and strappy heels.

The colourful iterations are also an excellent feel-good option and ideal for anyone who doesn’t buy into the neutral aesthetic which has proliferated over the last few years. If your palette could use a lift, & Other Stories has a selection of tank tops which are elegant with sweetheart necklines and ribbed fabric options in a plethora of hues. Arket is another high street brand that offered a strong selection of styles; this racer front has particularly caught my eye. I couldn’t let you scroll on, however, without highlighting my personal favourite if you’re looking for an affordable, covers-all-bases style: H&M’s ribbed vest top. It comes in seven shades, a range of sizes (from XXS to 4XL) and is made from a nice thick, sturdy cotton. I’m not the only one who loves it, though, and it repeatedly sells out. So much so that it has become like gold dust to get hold of. If you’re in the market for a classic tank top to bring out week after week, month after month and, yes, year after year, scroll down to see the best tank tops on the market.

Danielle Oreoluwa Jinadu shows us how to transition across the seasons in style with her slouchy take, all pulled together with a loved-in leather jacket over the top.

Proof that a vest top-and-jeans outfit will always serve you well, Marina Torres adds personality to the pairing with some fiery red ballet flats.

This taupe shade worn by Hannah Lewis looks great with the Toteme monogram trousers for a relaxed and hushed look.

Lorna showcases how to do subtle branding with her  logo tank. You can shop similar Loewe logo tank in the shopping below.

Style with linen trousers for a fresh look.

The sand shade will easily mix and match.

Loving this taupe colour and there are three other colours to choose from.

Fashion editors love WSLY basics.

Can’t beat that marl grey shade, perfect with pretty much everything.

This is my favourite style on the high street, and it comes in so many colours.

The nice top to pair with jeans.

Yellow is going to be everywhere this summer.

This will look so expensive worn with cream or beige wide-leg trousers.

Softness and warmth at an accessible price – M&S delivers once again.

A vivid orange and well proportioned thick straps. Love.

This coral shade looks great with creams and neutrals.

This pretty colour works for day or evening.

This feels so elegant.

There’s nothing like Issey Miyake pleats.

Soft silk styles add polish to your basics.

With a simple scallop edge and sherbet yellow tone, this tank looks great with brown shades.

With sheering elastic gathered fabric, this vest top brings a more delicate edge to the game.

Never say knit tops are boring.

Bold and loose, this Zara tank would look incredible with slouchy trousers.

Super cool.

Style seamlessly with your favourite jeans or tailored trousers.

Look how great this looks over a shirt! Done.

Sooo chic. Also available in pale blue.

A square neckline immediately elevates a tank top.

This, with monochrome pieces or accessories. Suublime.

This rust tone always looks so premium.

I personally love the scoop neck on this style.

This pairs really well with slip skirts.

I love the side vents and neckline of this vest, this would be so simple to take from day to night dressing with heels and accessories.

I love the red embroidery on the simple rib. It gives quite a retro look.

I love this whole tank top outfit.

Those Fiorucci angels adorn this simple vest for a cute look.

Subtle. No more, no less. Just perfect.

Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson always gets it right. This tank is also available in black, white and grey melange.

Classic and with the thin straps, this takes me back to the shape I wore as a kid. The monotone embroidered logo allows this top to be worn with just about anything but look how good it looks with toughened up accessories.
