The terms “fashion basic ” and “style staple” are not always the clearest or the most objective. After all, what is an essential for one person may be a luxury for another. But in my experience, very few people can argue with the fact that tank tops (or vests for us Brits) remain a core part of our wardrobes all year round, but particularly during the summer months. Whether you prefer to dress yours up with smart, tailored trousers, keep it casual with denim cut-offs or simply use yours to avoid a see-through shirt situation, the tank top is one item of clothing that you’re sure to get plenty of wear from when the mercury rises.
While you don’t want to mess with the classics too much (for example, you really can’t go wrong with a classic white tank top), we’ve really noticed that the offering this season feels more eclectic than ever, which means you can really pick and choose according to your tastes and wardrobe requirements. I’ve personally enjoyed the crinkle-effect tops, as seen on Abisola Omole below, as they offer a slightly more elevated spin on the classic tank and will look just as good tucked into jeans as they will with matching trousers and strappy heels.
The colourful iterations are also a fab feel-good option and ideal for anyone who doesn’t buy into the “50 shades of beige” aesthetic which has proliferated over the last few years. & Other Stories has a lovely selection of tank tops in bold brights which are super elegant with sweetheart neckline and ribbed fabric options. Arket is another high-street brand that does a great selection of styles, and this racer front has particularly caught my eye. I couldn’t let you scroll on, however, without mentioning my personal favourite if you’re looking for an affordable, covers-all-bases style: H&M’s ribbed vest top. It comes in seven shades, a range of sizes (from xxs to 4xl) and is made from a nice thick, sturdy cotton so you can feel comfortable wearing it without wearing a bra. I’m not the only one who loves it, though, and during the summer months it sells out so often it becomes like gold dust to get hold of. So if, like me, you’re in the market for a classic tank top to bring out year after year, scroll down to see the styles that I really rate right now.
