I'm An Expert at Assembling Outfits—These 7 Are Perfect For a Staycation

There’s no doubt about it: the lockdown gave us a new-found appreciation for all things British—and we’re refusing to shake it. With staycations being the only option, many of us took to exploring the best of the British Isles, staying in shepherd’s huts in Norfolk, cottages in the Cotswolds and pretending Cornwall is California. And while the doors to international travel have been fully flung open again, we’re still big fans of exploring our own country, even with long haul flights back on the cards. So, whether you’re going to the Lake District or Somerset, we’ve put together some outfit ideas that will be ideal for any trip to the countryside this summer.

A reality of a British holiday is that the weather will probably be moody and unpredictable, so below, you’ll find outfits for those unfortunate chilly days, as well as dress-and-sandal outfits for when the sun makes an appearance. There are some items that it seems like everyone is packing in their suitcases this year: practical sandals, chuck-it-all-in basket bags, classic jeans and printed midi dresses. So, if you’re planning your summer escape or next bank holiday, keep scrolling to see seven outfits that are ideal for any British holiday or stylish staycation. Happy travels.

Style Notes: Since “Cottagecore” burst onto the scene in 2018, it’s managed to work its way back to the top of our spring/summer moodboards every year since. Part of its appeal is its pretty, seasonal charm, and part is it’s reliance on “throw-on-and-go” dress and easy flats. Either way, floral dresses, raffia bags and ballet flats are always well worth packing for a small town stay.

Also a great wedding-guest dress.

Easily the best pair of velvet ballet flats on the high-street.

The raffia bag 2.0.

A “wear with everything” gold chain that you’ll wear on repeat.

Style Notes: If your countryside trips tend to be a little more active than sitting in the garden with a glass of rosé, you’re going to need some practical pieces perfect for exploring (whatever the weather). Be prepared for everything from intermittent showers to trekking through fields with a wax jacket and wellies that you’ll wear for years to come.

You’ll wear this all year round.

A fun way to incorporate shirred and bow details without being too twee.

A classic.

Of course you can wear these for a muddy festival, too.

Style Notes: Celebrate, fellow sunseekers! We come into our own in the warm-weather, and after last year’s heatwave, there’s a lot to play for. Get plenty of wear out of your bikini by wearing it as the base of a light, airy outfit best worn on the beaches of Britain’s coast. Simply add a leather flip flop or pair of slides and you’re good to go..

The square neckline is so flattering.

Wear with jeans, skirts, shorts, wde-leg trousers, mini dresses…

Maxi skirts are having a moment.

M&S always have the best, affordable accessories.

Style Notes: Of course, a holiday doesn’t have to mean that you’re heading to the countryside or the coast, and if you’re travelling to a busy city, you’ll appreciate an outfit that goes from day to night with nothing more than the switch of a shoe. Et voila.

Dress down with a chunky sandal, or dress up with a 90s mule.

These are so comfy that I bought two pairs.

A certified Who What Wear favourite.

I love the modern tortoiseshell colourway.

Style Notes: Is there anything more Instagrammable than checking into a luxury retreat for a weekend of being pampered? If there is, I’m yet to see it. A relaxing stay calls for ease first, and  light cotton and linens are perfect for translating pyjama-level comfort to outdoor wear. Throw on an easy sandal and transition effortlessly from bed, to massage table, to brunch.

You’re going to need a versatile tank top that won’t go sheer, snag, or lose its stretch.

Sure, beige linen is great, but have you ever tried stripes?

These have to rank in the top 10 of bestselling, cult favourite sandals of all time.

Trust me, this is far bigger than you think it is.

Style Notes: Festival season has already kicked off in the US, which means it’s only a matter of time until it reaches our shores. Whether you spend it glamping, camping, or liberally applying glitter, bohemian energy runs throughout festival fashion, and its legacy runs deeper than flower crowns. Do festival fashion the “grown up” way by adding textures like suede, leather, shearling and raw denim to floaty dresses and printed skirts.

This would look just as good with white trainers as it does with suede boots.

Tuck in your jeans and wear (proudly) with double denim.

I love the mix of stones.

Just Google “Kate Moss bandana” for all of the styling inspiration you need.

Style Notes: Wedding season is back and in full effect, so if you’ve got plans to travel across the country to celebrate the nuptials of your nearest and dearest, you can never go wrong with an elegant dress. Whether you’re the bridesmaid or the best friend, a halterneck is a universally flattering option that will keep you cool too, so bring on the summer evening parties.

The cornflower blue is beautiful, but it also comes in bright orange too.

White shoes are back and having a moment this season.

I’m not ready to turn in my mini bag for an XXXL tote quite yet.

Make the most of being bare-shouldered with a drop earring.
