The Toronto Blue Jays may have to do without their hottest hitter on Sunday.
Outfielder George Springer is not in the starting lineup for the series finale against the New York Mets after crashing out of Saturday’s contest.
Springer left the 3-2 loss to New York in the eighth inning after colliding with the right-field wall while trying to make a play on Jesse Winker’s game-tying triple.
Jays manager John Schneider said after the game that Springer was experiencing lower-back spasms.
The 35-year-old went down awkwardly and ran to pick up the ball as two Mets baserunners came around to score on the critical play. But once he threw the ball towards the infield, Springer went down again and eventually exited the ballgame.
Springer was batting .379 through nine games with one home run, five RBIs, two doubles and a triple.
Toronto will run an outfield of Davis Schneider (left), Myles Straw (centre) and Anthony Santander (right) on Sunday, with Alejandro Kirk slotting in at designated hitter.
Bowden Francis will start for the Blue Jays against Mets lefty David Peterson.
