While no fashion editor can be completely unbiased—try as we may, our own tastes will always be prevalent—we spend much of our careers honing the ability to present all the trends, even the ones we wouldn’t wear ourselves, without personal prejudice. However, I thought it would make for an interesting read to allow my colleagues to talk unfiltered about loving this season and which they feel, for lack of a better word, are becoming a little “dated”.
It’s worth noting, however, that the word “dated” holds slightly less influence in fashion circles than it does out with. A big part of our jobs is unearthing new trends, so the idea of something being “new” is always fleeting. So even though it mightn’t feel as fresh to us as it once did, chances are it’s still the height of fashion in the shops and on the streets. And that’s where it matters. If you like something or if a specific trend speaks to you, you should wear it, regardless of what’s “on trend”. Still, it never hurts to find out which trends the people who spot them for a living are excited about—and the ones they’re not.
So, if you’re interested in seeing which autumn trends our editors are passing on this season, scroll on. For good positive measure, we’ve balanced them out with the trends we will be investing in.
“Okay, so they aren’t actually dated at all but the flannel shackets we’ve seen a lot of over the past few seasons are just so not ‘me’ that I’ll be side-stepping them for autumn/winter in favour of something with a bit more polish. Instead, count me in for a chic tan, brown or cream shearling jacket!” — Hannah Almassi, Editor in Chief
The leather trim on this style elevates it to sleek new levels.
I love this warm beige hue.
Totême’s new chocolate-brown shearling jacket is next-level luxe.
“Okay, okay, so I’m definitely not over ankle boots and I fully intend on wearing the pairs I already own throughout the season. However, when it comes to buying a new pair of boots, the only kind I’m considering is a pair of knee-high boots. Elevated and sleek, they will give my existing dresses an edge.” — Joy Ejaria, social media editor
A staple in any shoe collection.
This ecru pair will instantly lift darker coloured dresses.
It might surprise you but oxblood is actually incredibly versatile.
“It might be controversial, but I’ve never been a fan of skinny jeans. Thankfully for me their comfier counterpart, leggings, are really having a moment. Along with the classic all-black pairs, which look great with oversized jumpers, blazers and knee-high boots, I also love the split-hem styles. Wear these with heeled mules and a silk top for a perfect evening look.” — Poppy Nash, managing editor
I’m into this high-waist pair.
Ideal if you’re on a budget.
Splits positioned to the front are perfect for showing off your shoes.
“With the likes of Miu Miu and the Y2K aesthetic pioneering the return of pleated midi skirts, the hold they have had on the fashion industry these past few seasons has been undeniably strong. Though they do look cute on many people, I’ve never really been into them as they’re just not my style. On the flip side, longline skirts with a more form-fitting, sleek design are what I’m lusting over this season. I love how they magically elongate my shorter frame!” — Remi Afolabi, video content creator
Slip skirts have been given the maxi treatment.
Between the colour and the draping, this maxi is a Y2K style dream.
For party season, try a velvet maxi.
“Move over ankle-grazing trousers, cropped jackets or blazers that actually fit you—there’s a new suit silhouette in town and the idea is the bigger the better. Be it with Mary-Kate Olsen-esque puddle pants or ‘borrowed from the boys’ tuxedo jackets (or both?), however you do it, just be sure to tell your tailor you won’t be seeing them for a while.” — Rebecca Rhys-Evans, branded content editor
Such a great colour.
If oversized suiting is what you seek, Frankie Shop is the answer.
Level up with a three-piece.
“As much as I admire the look of a polished outfit finished with an elegant cape, they always end up looking a little bit conservative on me. Autumn is my favourite season for dressing (and I know, I may be in the minority in saying that), but I love layering up and playing with textures, so I find the prospect of swapping a cape with a suede jacket far more exciting. I can wear it with everything from a white tee and jeans to a satin slip dress and heels, and who doesn’t love that kind of versatility?” — Remy Farrell, shopping editor
This cropped style is perfect for wearing over dresses.
One of the best suede jackets I’ve ever laid eyes on.
A classic style you’ll wear for years and years.
“Many of my dresses are more oversized or have romantic silhouettes such as puff sleeves and full skirts. Although I love them, I’m keen to embrace the sleeker silhouettes that have walked off the runway and direct onto my Instagram feed. A departure from the bodycon I associate with my youth, 2022’s iteration is more refined with tank styles and bandeau necklines, modelled in thicker or knitted fabrications for a premium finish.” — Maxine Eggenberger, assistant editor
Wear this with one of the creamy shearling jackets above for the ultimate winter white outfit.
I’m into the high neckline on this tube dress.
I’ve bookmarked this for party season.
