John Chaney, Temple's towering Hall of Fame basketball coach, dies aged 89

John Chaney, one of the nation’s leading black coaches and a commanding figure during a Hall of Fame basketball career at Temple, died Friday. He was 89.

The university said he died after a short, unspecified illness. He celebrated his birthday last week.

The greatness and wisdom of John Chaney extends far beyond the basketball court. For generations of Owls, he was a wise counselor, a dedicated teacher and a passionate leader. For many others, he simply was Temple.
