Katie Holmes Just Wore the Rich-Looking Colour I’ll Be Wearing All Autumn

With the weather as unpredictable as ever, it’s clear that the seasonal switch will happen within the blink of an eye. By this time in the year, our wardrobe staples have been working hard to adapt to different seasons, temperatures and occasions, and can feel slightly tired come autumn. But there’s an easy way to inject new life into your capsule wardrobe, and that’s with an addition of colour. For autumn, particular shades like camel, brown and soft grey might immediately spring to mind, but for me there’s one shade that always seems to stand out, and that’s burgundy.

Katie Holmes styled a burgundy maxi dress with black boots and a black bag during New York Fashion Week. A deep burgundy hue adds a richness that is perfectly placed for the cosy nature of autumn. Blending with the natural background, as leaves begin to brown and the days darken, this expensive-looking shade comes into its own. No matter the price point of a purchase, each time I add a splash of burgundy into my outfit builds, I’m always asked, “Where did you get that?”. Unlike our neutrals, burgundy remains a rarer shade to spot on the street, and right now, it’s trending for autumn. Whilst chocolate brown, beige and camel have their place, burgundy always adds a little oomph where other neutrals blend in.

The further brilliance of this shade is that it works with so many other colours. Of course, neutrals are an easy pairing, but there’s no need to stop there—mixing brown shades with burgundy’s red undertone lends itself well to gold metals and soft rust hues, too. Classic denim always works, and the pairing of deep red and blue is a particularly striking one. Or, you can go bold and create an entirely monochromatic burgundy look. If you’re easing in though, even the addition of a bag or pair of shoes can be enough to push the whole outfit into the expensive-looking world that burgundy promises.
