Hilary Knight scored a hat trick, including two goals late, as the United States defeated Canada 6-3 to win the gold medal at the women’s world hockey championships.
Knight’s three goals extended her lead atop the all-time tournament scoring list with 101 points.
The Canadians led the game 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but the Americans were able to tie the score each time before Knight put the U.S. ahead for good. Knight’s final two goals came only 27 seconds apart and were both on the power play, with the first coming with just over three minutes remaining in the final frame.
Abbey Murphy and Caroline Harvey also scored for the United States. Cayla Barnes added an empty-net goal to seal the win.
Brianne Jenner had two goals and Marie-Philip Poulin scored for Canada. Canada had won the last two golds in this tournament but now will settle for silver.
Czechia won a second-straight bronze medal earlier Sunday by beating Switzerland 3-2.
