Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies have both won the 2020 Lou Marsh Award as Canadian athlete of the year.
Duvernay-Tardif, who has a medical degree from McGill University, won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in February then spent the remainder of the year working on the front-lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec. The Saint-Jean-Baptist, Que., native opted out of the NFL’s 2020 season to continue battling the virus.
Davies, 20, played a starring role for Bayern Munich this season as the German club won five trophies, including the Champions League. Davies and his family immigrated to Edmonton from a refugee camp in Ghana when he was five and he’s used his profile with Bayern to become a spokesperson for the UN Refugee Agency, raising awareness and fundraising in support of refugees.
The Lou Marsh Award is voted on annually by a panel of Canadian media. Tennis star Bianca Andreescu won the award in 2019. This marks the first time since 1989 that the award will have two winners.
